How to manually deploy a war file in tomcat server

Hi all,
I'm using Mac Pro.
I want to deploy a war file in tomcat server.
When i place my war file in webapps folder of tomcat, its not unwar the war file.
Can any one please help me with this?
And also like to know how to run tomcat server in my machine

Well, if Tomcat isn't running, of course the war file will not be unpacked.

In Tomcat's bin folder you will find the shell scripts to stop and start Tomcat.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
