ActiveX like JARs

I worked in developing ActiveX components using c# to support some extra functionality at script level for Internet Explorer.
It was an ActiveX DLL.
Is the same possible using Java, like creating a JAR/library by which I can expose the Java objects as JavaScript entities?
To what extent Applets are helpful in this?

You could embed an invisible applet on the page (maybe an applet that is 1 by 1 pixels large); then JavaScript can call public methods in that applet through a facility called "LiveConnect". See the AppletsFaq for some more detail on that.
