In the Borders.com website, there is a listing of another book by K&B called SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java2 Platform 5.0 Practice Exams: Exam 310-05 which will be released on March 22nd, 2010.

Does anyone have an opinion about it? If it is for Java 5, then is it really useful for most of us, who are aiming for Java 6?

You are asking us the opinion about a book that is yet to be released ?

No, if you did not get an advance copy of the book then please wait two weeks before providing an opinion.

I think this book will help us to prepare for SCJP Plus certification.
Excellent!

Good thought. I hope it does help prepare for the SCJP Plus certification, whatever that is and whenever it comes out. Judging by the title of the book, it could be a bit of stretch. I wish someone who has seen the book can enlighten us one way or the other.

Hi Guys,

We hope to have some sort of SCJP 6 (which will work for 5), practice exams book for you as soon as possible, but it won't be for several months. When we have a definite release date we'll tell you on this forum.

hth,

Bert

Hi Bert,

Thank you so very much for the note. I started this topic while hoping to hear from you. Depending on when I can have time to take the SCJP 6 exam (after I filed my 2009 taxes and filed my 2010 census) I could wait for the next practice exams book.

th,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Don't wait!

The book is partially complete, but until Oracle / Sun figure out what's going to happen with the next version of the SCJP certification we're going to wait to finish the book. We want the book to be helpful for the new version, whatever that new version is.

hth,

Bert

Hi Bert,

I appreciate your frank and candid advice that convinces me to take the exam sooner rather than later. I was a little sobered by a column in this week's ComputerWorld about how certifications are not optional. I agree that I shouldn't wait for Oracle/Sun to thrash it out on what the SCJP really is.

th,
Larry

OTOH:

I'd never hire (or even screen) anybody based on them having an SCJP (or other certification). I hope I'm done programming before they become a "requirement", because it would keep out some of the best and brightest developers I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

The observation in that article "Many professional trainers have no real-world experience in the subjects they teach. Even the best typically haven't worked in a development shop for years." rings so true.

Well, I was a New York State certified professional engineer 30 years ago. Needing something fresher than that to put on my resume, I had to get me a genuine Sun Certificate, which came last Friday in the mail. That should be good for another 30 years.
