Java Developer Job--How much should I ask for?

Hi guys,

I'm about to be offered a developer job. We will be using spring, hibernate, and jboss. The job description is for someone with 3 years' experience. It is in Boston and salary.com states that the avg java dev makes $91K? Also, there may be some web dev responsibilities as well, and salary.com states that the avg web dev salary is $71k.

Could you guys give me what a good number to accept would be?

Thanks!

Hi,

I play a different sorta game when asked about or going about the salary negotiation part. If I get to the HR rounds (where such wuestions get asked) it probably means that I'm through with the Technical discussions I've had earlier? (Assuming technical discussions precede HR rounds and the evaluation is on a attend a round - if cleared then move to the next mode). I usually turn the question back at the interviewer. I say as I had cleared the tech rounds and am discussing the salary part its evident that you are open to make me an offer. So how much are you wiling to go with? I get to know at least their range this way (not always though).

Once I have a clearer picture of what figures they already have fixed in their minds I could negotiate better. If things get to that level I might have to list out points (examples help big time) where I have done and made a difference in the role/position they are looking for.

Cheers,
Raj.

There is no good way to do this. just like buying a house, whoever names a figure first looses.
