I'm just saying hello, having just submitted my first shot at Java-1b.

I'm new to Java but I've been coding for <mumble> years; however I'm largely self-taught, so the idea of a style guide or having someone review my code is quite alien. OTOH, trying to decipher someone *else's* code is quite familiar, so I appreciate the concept.

I'm really looking forward to this, both the nitpicking and the forum. Of course right now I'm looking forward to the nitpicking, soon it will probably be "Oh no! Not another learning experience!"

Hello, Ed! I'll get you added to the Assignment Log thread, and you can post your progress there if you want. It's kind of fun to watch others as they struggle along the same patch of trail. Hope yer nitpick ain't too brutal! And welcome, as well!

Aren't they all?

When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

As a heads up in the Cattle Drive, a couple of things are required when going through the assignment.
The following are required:
1. Wall - to bang on it when yer stuck.
2. Hair - to pull on when you do not understand what needs to be done according to the nitpicker.
3. Beer - after you have accomplished the task, a nice cold beer is always nice to have.

LOL.

Good Luck!

I generally figure out what needs to be done right after I spend hours on it, fight with it, then submit it.

Something about a completed email makes it all come together.

D'oh. Uh, that was in the *other* English, and means certainly not.

In my day job, I have the same experience... fight with a bug, trace it til my neurons are about to fuse into slag, ask a colleague... and suddenly the answer is right there in front of me. I have to apologize to my colleague for the drive-by before he even has a chance to respond.

They say rubber duckies and stuffed penguins are great surrogate colleagues for these types of situations, as are cardboard cutouts. I have to try those.

1. I use a slightly different approach: "To continue, strike keyboard with forehead."
2. No can do, I don't have enough hair left to pull. May I swear instead? (Not that I need permission!)
3. I'll usually go with wine, just now I have a glass of Torrontes in hand. OK, next to me, I'm using both hands to type and it's gauche to use a straw.

Thanks for all the good wishes!
