Open up an editor and start typing.

And you'll probably want to learn the JavaMail API.

Setting up mail servers is independent of any web application, and certainly is not a Servlet issue. I've moved this post to a more appropriate location.

There are a number of freeware mail servers you cold check out, such as JAMES.

The answer "Start typing" is pretty close to the mark. Although you'll want to decide what you want the site to do, first. Did you have a specific question? If not, why don't you start developing until you get stuck? Then you will have a specific question, which somebody might be able to answer.

Don't you?

Look at the functionality of Yahoo and Gmail: do you really think a short answer here is likely to provide you any useful information? If you don't know how to get started on something like this, nothing we can fit into a few paragraphs here is going to help you. If you have *specific* questions, we're likely to be able to be of more assistance. For example, what *specifically* don't you know how to do or are having trouble implementing?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
