log4j.rootLogger=DEBUG, HelloWorld

...
...
log4j.appender.HelloWorld.File=../application.log

Question is --- what is the starting or current directory for "log4j.appender.HelloWorld.File" ?
Since I developed a .ear file and give this to someone else and they can deploy to their server, which directory is this "../application.log" supposed to be on the server ? what is this "../" supposed to be ?

It will depend on the application server, I would not recommend having ../<logname>.log as you may not have permission to put a log file there.
