Give us more information about your background, what technologies you know, years of experience, and expected salary.

The company you want to shift to and the role you will play there will also affect salary. What kind of company are you looking for ? Services / Products / Maintenance / Research and development ?

Software Industry in India is coming out of its bad time.

Things are seems to be improving now. Both freshers and experienced are getting good response from IT sector now a days. Attrition is increasing in almost all the companies.

The most likely reason is that no company deems you worth a 90% higher salary than whatever it is you're making now. What makes you think that you are?

1 lac (or lakh) is 100,000 Indian rupees. For current exchange rates, check http://xe.com (or estimate $2200 USD, 1600€). Ergo, 12 lakhs approx. $26,000.

And, although things have been steadily inflating in the Indian labour market, I think is still considered a pretty respectable income.

A lot the of modern-day software development platforms are designed to permit parcelling out work to those with the best aptitude for it. A lot of modern-day business is predicated on making one person do all the work, regardless of aptitude.

Annual of course!!
In India salaries are typically <no. of years experience>+(2-4 lacs) per annum in project based companies (service companies).
So for 6 years experience, service sector companies typically will offer in the range of 8-10 lacs/annum ($17500 - $22000 approx). But product companies can offer a lot more, 2-3 times of experience (# of years) is very common. So try in product companies.

Make sure that you are technical enough to work in a product company.

Product companies pay higher because their requirements are different. They require people who are technically sound.

In Sydney investment banks and insurance companies pay better salaries and rates.

From my personal experience (I work with a product company as architect and in the past I have worked as developer with a top 20 product company) , I would say it is hard to get through their interview process. But once you are through you may be doing work that may not be pure development (and you won't know that beforehand :-) ). I have seen people designated as technical lead or senior technical lead working individually and writing shell scripts or monitoring networks. They get very high salaries but work they do involves environment support and no product development. They spend a lot of time on fine-tuning the environment for their running products. So I don't agree they necessarily need people with extra ordinary minds. Because they pay high salaries (and they can't pay less anymore to sustain their paymaster tag ;-) ) they set high standards for selection procedure so that people take them seriously.

I very well agree with Varun Chopra. I (working for a product company) used to wonder why these people outside say that "Need to be technically sound in a product company"

I too concur with Varun and Muthukrishnan. I switched from a service company to a leading product company, and believe me, I found the work in service company far more challenging.

Only saving grace was the salary hike that I got after making a move. That compels me to leave the product company after having served it for one year.

My experience is different - I worked for 4.5 years in service companies, and now working for almost 6 years in product companies. The work I have been doing in service companies was rather short-term. On the other hand, I have really got to work on excellent concepts and making code better each time in product companies. Maybe because I have been involved in this product ever since its inception, but my experience in product company has been a very happy one, and my technical skills have been put to good use. The only drawback remains lack of diversity of technologies you'd be working on. Since product uses specific set of technologies, you don't really get a chance to use diverse technologies that you may be able to do in a service companies, if you get a chance to work on diverse projects.

I think key factor is whether you work on product development or product support. I have been fortunate enough to get involved in product development since inception and had privilege of working with some brilliant programmers! But yes, getting into was difficult - we even discussed problem solving approaches when we all knew that problem has no definite answers.

So as a conscious decision, for last few months I am working part-time in another service company as a consultant. It's demanding, but I am enjoying different set of clients, different work cultures & different project challenges along with different technologies.

As for payments, I thought I was well paid, but some expectations & figures always surprise me. I think 8 to 10 LPA is common for 6 years experience, 12 LPA is possible, but very difficult unless you're already drawing 9 LPA and new company is desperate about your expertise. In open technologies, you seldom have that luxury.
