You need to be more specific. What are your current skills? Which type of applications are you targeting (games, web-applications, desktop-applications, frameworks, etc.)? Are you searching something specifically exclusively for the language Java? Or the whole development process of a project (some catchwords: planing, version control, refactoring)? Or more something how to build a good application (design patterns, architecture, etc.)? You won't find everything in a single book.
So? What's your need?

Hello,
I am speaking of a swing based application.
A sample swing based application can do where database design, project planning, network issues and record locking concepts are well explained.
The reason is that I want to work on an application where I can get a good expertise in developing a project and can understand the life cycle of a project.
If a well known list of books are provided I would be very thankful.

Thanks.

Joachim's statement still holds true based on the description of what you're looking for. You're not going to be able to find a single book that covers all of those areas.

I'm sure there are book lists to be found, but finding the lists may be just as much work as putting together a list yourself. I'd recommend going to safaribooksonline.com and do a search on the particular topics that you're interested in. You'll get hits on just about every book that is out there, and you can get a quick synopsis of the book with a table of contents. You can also look at book reviews directly from the search results page (i think they get pulled from Amazon).
