I don't know wheather this topic has been raised before or not but I am confused regarding my transition from Java/J2EE web development work to Document management kind of work with a Java based product Imagenow. For those who don't know Imagenow is a well established Document Imaging product by Perceptive Software like Documentum by EMC Corporation. It captures, organizes and manages unstructured data and present to the intended user(Role Based) at the moment it's needed.
Workflow designing includes javascript and some core java would be required. Now please post your views on opting this as a career, Is ECM (without Documentum) a good option?
It is good to know something product specific but at the same time keep focus also on generic java related stuff like Spring, EJB, and some other widely used java based technologies.

No single product or technology can serve as the basis for a career. While knowing some particular product or API may help in your current (or next) job, it doesn't ensure success in your career; for that, much more fundamental knowledge and abilities are needed that have nothing to do with any particular language. Java, too, will go away during the course of your career, so you need to be prepared for that.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ulf Dittmer! Technologies come & go, you need to solve problems & provide solutions effectively using all those technologies as mere tools and that will give you a good career.
