I have been using Subtitle Creator: http://sourceforge.net/projects/subtitlecreator/

Warning: subtitles are rendered as graphics, not as text. I have yet to get Subtitle Creator to generate decent graphical text (it always looks great in the editor but then looks horrible on the TV screen). Is is very different from Closed Captioning which is rendered as text and displayed by the CC handler in the TV.

I'm still ticked off that Pinnacle Studios, which I paid good $$$s for, does not provide a subtitle editor.

Wordpad.

Generally subtitles are stored in *.srt files. and I just opened it in Wordpad.

but there could be other file types too like *.idx or *.sub .
