To wait or not to wait
If you decide to wait for scjp7, you have to be very very patient - java 6 was released in 2006, SCJP 6 exam appeared 2-3 years later.

Good point Ireneusz. If Java 7 is coming out in the latter part of this year then the soonest the new SCJP exam will come out is in late 2012. That's too long a wait.

ujjawal please don't put your reply in [quote] tags, it makes it confusing. [quote] tags are for quoting what someone else said. IMHO there is no point in waiting for SCJP 7, no one knows when it might be released. Older version of SCJP are valid if new version is released.

Mohamed there is no update for the new Programmer Plus certification, no one knows what will happen to it.

Deepak are you planning to ever give it back to me

Java 7 will not be out for a long time, most likely not before 2011. And when Java 7 is out, it will take more time before SCJP 7 is out - if there's ever going to be an SCJP 7, who knows if the certification program will have been changed before then.

Anyway, if you want to become certified, it makes no sense at the moment to wait for a new version of the SCJP. Just do SCJP 6.

Most probably, there wont be a new SCJP. Oracle is in the process of updating names/objectives of almost all Sun Certifications. So wait for a maximum of 2 more months to see the new Oracle Certifications.

Btw, Java will still remain Java, programming techniques are not going to change that much, so you study for SCJP 6 or 5 (whichever you want to appear for) and later when Oracle updates new objectives, You study them too.

What is the urgency to take the SCJP 7 exam, if there will be one?

I don't know about other developers but in all my jobs, software development work has been frustratingly restricted to Java 1.4 by company policy. Some of my clients only upgraded to that version from 1.2 or 1.3 in 2008. Thinking about using even Java 5 was a wishful pipe dream. Companies, especially big ones, give several explanations for this slow progress to newer technologies. One, all the company's software developers in IT have been trained and tested (not necessarily certified) in old Java and there is no budget to retrain all of them to use new Java. Two, all the legacy software was written in old Java and they want consistency with that code. Three, they say "let's stay with old Java and wait for other companies to use and test new Java and find out what bugs it has".

Like the advice that everyone else has given, just take the latest available SCJP exam and forget about trying to catch the next version. After all, an SCJP is like a first degree karate black belt. It only means you have started on the path of serious Java study. So far, Oracle/Sun requires that one becomes an SCJP as just the first step to the Master levels of SCJD, SCWCD, SCBCD, SCDJWS, SCMAD, and SCEA, which are really meaningful certifications.
