Hi All,

I am in urgent need of all your advices regarding cracking scjp and SCJD in 4 months.

I was asked by my employer to complete SCJP and SCJD tests by this july end. Even I have plans to do them as it will be useful for my career. I have worked on core java for one of my projects an year ago. So cracking SCJP should not be problem for me and I am planning to take it in May 1st week.

Also SCJD contains 2 tests. So what's the latest date I can apply for SCJD test-1 after cracking SCJP in May-1st week.
How much preparation we need here? Based on this I need to schedule SCJD test-1.
Does June 2nd week seems Manageable? If yes, can we manage to write SCJD test-2 and results by July end or august-1st week? How much time do they take for evaluating SCJD test-1 and test-2? I am not aware of this time, so I need to plan based on this.

Thanks a lot for your patience for reading, please try to reply here...

Hi Naren,

I don't believe working with core Java on a project 1 year ago will be enough for the SCJP. The SCJP is a really tough exam, so you'll have to study hard (the K&B book is the one you need).

SCJD is a complete other story: first of all check the ScjdFaq. Secondly there are a lot of problems due to Oracle's acquisition of Sun, so a lot of people have trouble registering, downloading and uploading their assignment. Maybe it will be fixed until 1st week of May. So all the info regarding scjd is unsure due to the acquisition and reorganisations. Normally it takes 4 - 6 weeks until your assignment is graded.

If you have full working days to prepare for SCJP and SCJD, it is manageable. If you have to do it in your spare time (combining with a full time job for example) it will be very, very hard. I spent from January 2010 until May 2010 to pass SCJD combining it with a full-time job.

The best of luck!
Kind regards,
Roel

Thanks a lot Roel for your response, it was very much useful for me. I have one question though - can you try to help me on this?

You have said 4-6 weeks evaluation time for SCJD test-1. What's the same time for SCJD test-2?
Can I take SCJD test-2 before evaluation of test-1 was done?

Do I need to prepare anything extra for SCJD test-2 separately than what I did for test-1??

You clearly didn't carefully have read the ScjdFaq like I suggested. Otherwise you would have encountered this question (which will answer all the questions you asked in your last post).

Hi Naren,

from my own experience;

SCJP
I had 2.5 years industry experience of developing in Java and at first glance there didn't appear to be much for me to learn.
I started studying half a day a week in February for SCJP and quickly found this wasn't enough. I then upped it to 1hr a day, 4 days a week + a half day and I passed the test in July. Maybe you could do it quicker if you're studying for it full-time.

SCJD
I started the SCJD assignment at the end of February this year (1 month ago) and, surprise, surprise, it is very difficult and time consuming. Since then I have been working on it full time (so 4 weeks @ 39hours a week) and I think I could be between 2 to 4 weeks more. Once I've submitted it I'll sign up for the 2nd part and then I'll need to wait 4-6 weeks for it to be graded.

So in total I'll have spent about 3 months or 12 weeks (based on a 39 hour week) then wait 4-6 weeks. But I must stress that's just coming from my own experience, you need to decide for yourself once you get into it.

Final advice;

don't underestimate the difficulty of either certification,
allow yourself plenty of time to study / do the assigment,
let yourself get into the study / assignment before making any estimates

Regards,

John

Thanks Roel and John, indeed it was very helpful and thoughtful ... To sum up time takes to finish SCJD is -> Preparation time + finishing SCJD test-1 + test-2 (can be taken immediately) + 4-6 weeks for result ... right?

So excluding preparation time itself we need 3 months of time for SCJD right, in general?
Thanks to all ....

3 months sounds reasonable to me but that's because it is an estimate for me! How long it'll take you depends entirely on your current experience and knowledge of Java.

Look at the topics you need to know about for SCJD and decide for yourself what additional learning time you'll need and factor that in to any estimate you make.
