2. JLS

4. Java cookbook
5. Hardcore Java
6. Java after Dark

I wish "Head First Java" was around when I started.

Also, the "Core Java" books by Horstmann and Cornell, and "Thinking in Java" by Eckel.

Apress has been a great option for years. Thats how I learned Obj-c and Java.

I liked the C and C++ Dietel books I read in college but I have not even seen the Java one. I have liked
Head First Java 2nd Edition and Thinking in Java

Another really good book is Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz.
