hi, I'm thinking of starting to learn Java GUI. Can anybody give me some tips on how to go about it. I'd also greatly appreciate it if some books could be recommended. Thank you.

I suggest you to start with swing tutorial by Sun

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/ui/index.html

I personally find it great, but it's just a personal taste.
There you'll find suggestions for books too.

If you're going to purchase a new book, make sure it is updated to cover java 1.6 (not sure if any do)
if you can get a cheap second-hand book, at least 1.4 needs to be covered - there were major changes in 1.4

the swing tutorial is the best resource
