word puzzles

Hi

I have an assignment to create a word puzzle. I am new to game development, so bear with me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1. Can someone recommend some good web sites for references? Either Java or JavasScirpt is fine.
2. Any good books for creating word puzzles or online games?
3. If I use free word puzzle software, how to plug in to the Java or JavaScript project?

I don't know at what level you're working at but a hangman game would be quite easy to create.

pick a word from a dictionary

do
   let the user guess letters

   if wrong guess
      draw an extra part to the picture if they get it wrong 
   else 
      fill in the letter if they get it right
while the words not completed or hangman not complete
