Got a certification kit today from Sun for an exam that I have NEVER taken

I took my SCEA part 1 on the 17th of this month and cleared it. Today I was surprised to see a certification kit from Sun in my mailbox as I knew that a certification kit is NOT sent for completion of SCEA part 1. When I opened it, I could not believe my eyes. Sun has sent me a congratulatory letter stating that I have completed all requirements for the "Sun Certified Security Administrator for the Solaris Platform". Along with the letter are the certificate, lapel pin and wallet card stating that I am certified. However, I have never been an administrator in my life and have certainly NOT taken the exam for which the certificate has been issued.

BTW, my name, address, phone number are all correct in the mailing. The certificate states my name correctly as well. So it is not a case of someone's certificate landing in my mailbox.

The idiots who work in the certification fulfillment department of Sun/Oracle are diminishing the value of the certification that we are all working hard for by being so careless.

I will be contacting Sun to let them know that they sent it to me by mistake, but they better send me a postage paid self addressed envelope or Fedex account number if they want their stuff back.

Funny! - actually you will not receive a certificate for the part I - in my case I didnt even get an email stating I passed the part I exam. I just have the report that they give at the prometric location.

Even I did not get any email for clearing part 1. I think I will hold onto my SCEA part 1 prometric report a bit tighter till I get my SCEA certificate. Who knows whether Sun/Oracle have any record of my having taken the SCEA part 1. This really sucks big time.

For part 1, prometric report is only proof that we have cleared the part 1. I dont think sun send any email notification for part 1.

If you register in cert manager site, with your prometric ID, then it shows online also, that part 1 as pass.

Thanks for the tip Deepak. I just logged into cert manager and indeed it does show that I am now a certified solaris administrator.
Luckily, the certmanager.net/sun_assignment site shows that I have cleared SCEA part 1 as well. So I guess I should be okay atleast till the next fiasco.

Looks like I'm a victim of this 'bug' in the Sun/Oracle Certification System too.
I've cleared my SCEA-1 and I've been awarded a 'Sun Certified Security Administrator for Solaris 9' certificate.

Worse still, the site tells me that I've only 'enrolled' into the SCEA -5 Part 1 (not actually passed it). Luckily, I have my prometric certificate to prove otherwise.

Have written to who2contact@sun.com, lets see what happens
Sun/Oracle have really got to get their act together. This is utter nonsense.

Hello,

why the heck is that a bad thing to happen? Don't say anything, just pay for part 1 again and retake if you must. Then you paid for two exams, but you also got two certs and studied for just one. I'd trade any of mine for your Sun Certified Security Administrator for Solaris 9, because I can retake them any time since I already know the material.

You are kidding, right??? Why would I want to have a certification on my resume unless I can back it up with real knowledge. If I cannot backup a certification with real knowledge, prospective employers will really doubt my other certifications as well.

On the other hand, if you are talking about impressing your girl friend with a huge stack of certifications, that is an entirely different thing.

Not yet, but I am not holding my breath. Of all the problems that they must be facing right now, this probably would rank lowest in their priority list. In the meantime, my Solaris 9 administrator certificate is lying on my desk gathering dust.

So far, I don't see any future from the merger of these two companies.
Why don't they just keep the old Sun system and put the new system online only
you make sure there is no such funny thing happened?

I think that I got to the bottom of this up by Oracle. It looks like this has little to do with part 1 and a whole lot to do with purchasing part 2.

The assignment part (part 2) of the SCEA certification has the certification code 310-301A. The certification code for the "Sun certified security administrator" is 310-301 (exactly the same as SCEA part 2 except for the A at the end) . Beats me why these numb nuts had to choose the exact same number except for the alphabet.
It is quite possible that one of their programs or possibly a spreadsheet formula is numeric and not alphanumeric. So all the folks who have bought SCEA part 2 are likely candidates to get a free Solaris administrator certification kit.

Anyway, I have not heard anything back till now from Sun/Oracle in response to my email stating that they sent it to me by mistake.

the real problem with this up is that your 'published' credentials include a certification that you have not earned.. (and this is a bad thing for someone verifying your credentials.. they wont know which one is the fake/unearned one)

P.S. you can 'publish' your certification status from the certmanager site. This action sends an email with a URL and a password to the receipient who can then use that to verify your certification credentials on the certmanager site.

There is a checkbox next to each credential. You can select only those that you want to publish in the generated email.
