Anybody tried? Any issues? I got lots of important data on 9.10 and am a bit scared. Of course I plan a backup but even then.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition on my Dell Mini 9. Works well, looks even better than the previous version. Initially the wireless network didn't work, I had to connect it to a wired network and then it automatically proposed to install the necessary proprietary drivers for the wireless network card.

It has only been out (at least the final version) since yesterday, so it's a bit early to tell if it's really stable etc. It should be, because it's an LTS (long term support) release, in which the focus is on stability instead of innovation.

This is very good to hear - 9.10 didn't volunteer to install any proprietary drivers (at least not for me). Looks like I will try the Live CD today or tomorrow and if all goes well update my laptop and desktop (and even my various VMs).

Well I backedup all my stuff and Hit the System->Administration->Update Manager
Got the screen with 10.4 LTS is available
Hit the Upgrade button.
Guess what? It told me "Could not download the release notes. Please check your internet connection".
I mean WTF! I AM online since I am writing this.
Googled around. Looks like this is a know issue. Great. Issues even before I upgrade.
For now I am downloading the "alternate iso version" mentioned here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
Lets hope, at least that works.

I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.4 live CD and ran it on my laptop. Was happy to see that it offered to install the proprietary drivers for my wireless card and for my nvidia card. Also, the sound driver worked (see https://coderanch.com/t/468816/Linux-UNIX/Ubuntu#2111289 for my problems with 9.10). So I did a clean install of 10.4, wiping out my prior Ubuntu 9.04 partition. I am in the process of resbuilding my system - installing the apps I want, setting up my preferred configuration, etc.

Personally, I dislike the default theme. I suspect that a lot of people like black/dark-grey windows and buttons but not me (but then I have no color sense...). I much preferred the Human Theme that came with 9.04. I also cannot get used to the Min/Max/Close buttons being on the left-hand side of the window title bar, too many years of having those buttons on the right-hand side have conditioned my muscles to automatically move my mouse in that direction when I want to close a window. Googling how to change the button location is on my todo list.

Well finally got it done. The update manager is showing me some partial updates. Will sort it out later.
Overall looks good.

@Peter
Human is my preferred theme too. On 10.4, if you use this theme, the buttons are on the right hand side as always.

Apparently this is going to be the default setting going forward for Ubuntu releases. They do have a way to change it back to right-hand side buttons http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1465461

I browsed through the various themes online and one of them switched the buttons back to the "correct" location, not sure which one did in, I know it wasn't Quiet-Human (I could not find Human).

Apparently this is going to be the default setting going forward for Ubuntu releases.

It always heartens me to know that people who are infinitely smarter than I am are looking out for me so that I won't do things the wrong way.
But seriously, I read some of the reasons behind the decision (that post was the first thing that came up when I tried googling a solution). The idea behind it is good - combine the title bar buttons and the menu bar into a single entity to reclaim some vertical real estate, because today's monitors are short and wide. (I am not looking forward to my 1280x800 laptop breaking and getting stuck with one that is 1280x720 - hey those extra 80 pixels are important! I am also glad I got both of my 24" desktop monitors at 1920x1200 before they shrunk to 1920x1080.)

The File Browser used to have an editable address bar - it would show either the full path text, or buttons for each directory in the path. In 10.4, all I get are the buttons. I miss the editable address bar, not having it makes connecting to Windows shares a multi-step process (I used to just type "smb://windowshost/sharename" to get to my Windows files). Yet another thing to google.

Also, "Random Play" in RhythmBox appears to be broken - I had to shuffle the song list to get it to not play in order. That is sort of a minor annoyance, but something I can live with.

Wow, you guys are a lot braver than I am. I usually wait a month or so before I do an upgrade. Give it time to let someone else find the major bugs.

Actually, crazy might be a better word. But so far I m happy with it (once I changed the theme).

Peter wrote:Also, "Random Play" in RhythmBox appears to be broken

This was my fault. I has too impatient to let RhythmBox read the Music directory and thus ended up playing songs listed under Queue instead of under Music. I deleted the songs under Queue and am not playing songs under Music with Random Play. Nice feature: RhythmBox places an icon in the upper-right notification area. Clicking the icon show the song being played and provides a few control options.

They started a good thread here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469475 about known issues and workarounds. The first point, I guess provides a way to switch to editable address bar.

I tried it and ended up with a PC which would only boot into Windows Had to reinstall an older version (I found a disc labelled 9.04) on my / partition and then everything worked again. I think I shall emulate Pat Farrell.

I seem to have had the better experience so far. Just fired up Update Manager, saw the notice about 10.04 being available and asked for the upgrade. Over my "Broadband" here in India, took all night and then some to get the 800MB required. But a couple of reboots later, all was well.

Big plus from 9.10 is that the PC is able to drive my LCD TV better. Earlier, I was stuck at 800X600, but now can go upto 1280X720.

As for the buttons on the left, yes they are a pain, and probably will switch them back to the right hand side.

I ran into one glitch, and it is a fairly big one. With 9.04 I got about 2 hrs of run time from my battery. With 10.04 I get 80 minutes. That is a 33% decrease! I had noticed earlier that my laptop fan seemed to run continuously; guess I will have to see what is running that is keeping the hot (and thus draining the battery). Just for the record, Win7 gives me about 2 hrs run time also.

The more Ubuntu does the less impressed I become, with each new release. For me it seems to always fix one thing but break 2 other things that were working before. It was hell getting my wireless network to work this time (I had to compile junk) and my USB logitech headset no longer works. All the additional "social" junk is just a waste since I use my own preferred tools for that stuff anyway. The only good thing I'll say about it is that it starts up and shuts down a lot quicker. But honestly, I leave my computer on most of the time anyway so it's still a "meh" feature.

Ubuntu has been top of the Linux desktop heap for a couple years now. Time for some young upstart to knock it on its kiester, right?
I did the upgrade and haven't had any problems (yet!).

A few locale issues, that you may not have. I'm using the Japanese settings. After updating, the default Japanese font used changed. The one used is ugly (a Chinese font which should have been removed during the update). After some googling, "sudo aptitude remove ttf-wqy-zenhei" fixed it. Google Chrome's fonts changed too, almost unreadable... I was tired of trying to fix things here and there, so I went back to Firefox... The desktop icon of my iPod doesn't show Japanese. Japanese characters turn into "???". I will have to look into that. I also put the window buttons back to the right.

I have the impression that the boot time is "a bit" slower than before (although it is said to be quicker), but it may just be an impression. Shutdown is as quick as ever
