What is the best way to achieve seperation/plugability between Flex and Java?

Flex may become obsolete in the future because of advances in HTML or fallouts with Apple. What is the best way to ensure a good seperation of concerns between Flex and Java so that an application can be future-proofed and allow a relatively easy substitution of one presentation technology for another?
