How to achieve colspan in <h:panelGrid>

Does anyone know, I am using JSF 1.1
I don't see any attribue in it that can do column span

and does anyone have a suggestion (hack) on how to skill the data cell
since the panel grid put stuff there sequentially. I have try using empty <hutputTex />
it works but just felt it was bad practice.
