Personally, I feel every web server could be worked together with portal server, just depends on how we configure them to work together, isnt it?

It just depends on platform which are you using.

I guess the vendors might provide *already-configured* binary for us to download. Just like what Tomcat-JBoss did. This will help us with less pain when configuring the environment.
