Cannot get log4j and hibernate to log from EJB in 10.3

I'm trying to get hibernate to log using log4j in an EJB using weblogic 10.3 & Oracle Workshop for Weblogic (eclipse)

I know log4j is configured correctly because I use it in web applications, it also logs in the ejb, but I cannot get any hibernate logs out.

I know it is possible because it worked in 8.1, but I'm stumped on how to get it going now.

I've:
changed the logging in the console to log4j
added the wllog4j.jar to the class path
added commons-logging.properties files to the web and ejb projects and tried different setting in them
made sure log4j and wllog4j.jar were on the build path of all projects, made sure only one or the other were on the build path

I'm stuck, I've searched online, but I guess I don't even really know enough to properly describe my problem so that my searches return something useful.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
