This week's book giveaway is in the Agile and other Processes forum. We're giving away four copies of The Mikado Method and have Ola Ellnestam and Daniel Brolund on-line! See this thread for details.
I want to purchase a domain name. I googled for it and found number of companies sell it with different prices. This made me think about various questions.
- The same domain address was available from all the companies that means they have not purchased them in advance. So how come cost is different? From *where* actually they get the domain name and sell it to me?
Thank you.

Companies typically do not sell domain names. Their charges are based on services related to registering the domain name. So, after checking to see if a particular name is not being used, the company offers a service to register the name for you for a specific period of time. The charges for these services as well as the length of time the registration is active is what varies from company to company.
