It's too bad that nobody from Oracle joined JavaRanch to answer our questions. I remeber old good times when Evelyn Cartagena posted here new Sun exams announcements and assisted here when problems occured. With Oracle take over it looks like they are not interested in Java professional volunteers (paid betas, no exam objectives posted).

Yes, Oracle learning department do have now a bunch of facebook (which is just a social network, but not a Java community) accounts and twitter accounts for announcements and some sort of communication, but JavaRanch is a big (if not the biggest) [very friendly] Java community and it would be nice to have some Oracle JavaRancher here (just a dream).

Usually how long it takes a Beta exam to become an official exam? I checked the exam objectives in the above link and it is almost same as the current exam. But when you look at the Training course details, JDBC, JPA, AJAX etc are added. I am currently preparing for the SCWCD exam and planning to take the exam in July. Should I wait for some time to see how things progress with the J2EE6 exam?

Please advice!

3-5 hrs with 215 questions way too much I guess. Maximum 100 tough questions would be acceptable if they want to make it more harder to pass.

By the way, I just bought my Head First Servlets and JSP and I am planning to buy the Charles Lyons and because of the Oracle updates, I won't buy Charles version for now. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

I had the same thought as you do, but I took SCWCD5 the day before yesterday and passed it. Don't miss it, if you have prepared for a long time.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned about the certification betas. I don't mind the format - the old ones (before Oracle bought Sun) were generally about 180 questions and 4 hours. 215 questions in 3-5 hours is fine - MS does their betas at regular-exam length, with 180 minutes for the exam and another 45 for comments.

I just, as I stated in the thread I started regarding the new EJB exam, am opposed to paid betas. Yes, it's a great deal if you're already going to be going for the cert... but it's the whole concept of a quid-pro-quo - we're doing them a favor of testing the test, in exchange for a free test. I want to know what else I get for my money.

And, as was also mentioned here.... it's a shame that Oracle doesn't seem to "get it" that there's a very interested community here that's willing to help them with these things and with Java evangelism in general (and about certification in specific) if they'd reach out to us. I can tell you that they don't respond when you try to get their attention on Twitter, which is infuriating. Just makes me less willing to 'update' my certifications.

The specs look exactly the same as for the old SCWCD exam. Wonder why they bothered bringing it out? Can't envisage any major changes there, could be wrong though. But Cork people are rarely wrong!

My guess is that if there are any changes, they'll be to test on Servlet 3.0, which basically means knowing:

Annotations rather than deployment descriptor elements

Asynchronous request/response lifecycle

Programatically adding servlets/filters/listeners (actually useful?!)

The extra convenience methods and annotations in the API (e.g. for file uploading)

The new login/logout methods on HttpServletRequest (minor but useful API change)

I'd be surprised if anything else made it into a new exam... the bulk of that lot is the first 2 points. If you know generics and annotations from Java SE, then the migration to the new specifications is an easy one... just a case of learning a bunch of annotations rather than web.xml deployment descriptor elements!!

If that's all it is, us authors are happy... means at most we rewrite a chapter and make a few tweaks here and there

After all you get the certification...well if your score is well in the questions that they selected.

I have a SCWCD 1.4 certification. I registered few days ago for the new beta test CX-311-085 (exam on Sep 30).

I still have (and can still review) old Manning SCWCD Exam Study Kit book (2nd edition) but of course I need to focus on the differences between 1.4 and EE6 certifications. I see few comments here, a couple of extra questions:

- assuming no book cover yet the beta one, is it worth to buy a SCWCD 1.5 book and if so which one? Reading feedbacks on Amazon had the feeling that many were simply again 1.4 with a new title/sticker.

- what should I mainly focus for EE6?

- am I losing my time and 33£? I still anyway feel good to revise

Thanks for the feedback. I was really tempted to buy the book but on Amazon I read this review of the book "But after receiving the book. It's the same as the old book with a sticker with the updated exams on the front page." So question is ... really a EE5 book or again an old book and better if I use the one I have already?

Does somebody know what is the structure of a web fragment ? I tried to include some classes beside META-INF/web-fragment.xml
but the GlassFish version bundled with Netbeans 6.9 cannot load the classes from the web fragment.

Guys, does anyone have an confirmed information about releasing new JEE6 certificates?

Looking at Oracle Beta Certificates page, it seems that the beta exams are nearly finished and within 10 weeks from tommorow, the final certificate will be published.

I was thinking about taking SCWCD, but taking those information under consideration, it seems more reasonable to wait just a bit.

Just thought that someone would have some confirmed info about that.

I took yesterday the beta exam. I looked today in the my sun/oracle account (www.certmanager.net/sun)
and the test is not mentioned there as being taken. Is it normal ? It takes more days to actualize the state or what ?

Beta test results are normally announced after a couple of months (10 weeks as mentioned above). Be patient and check the certmanager.net site after 10 weeks. 8-)

I know that it takes about 10 weeks to receive the result but I thought that the certmanager will show the date when the exam was taken.
Have you also took the beta exam and your certmanager is not updated ?

Well, I can suggest you to look at the Prometric web site (2test.com).

It shows both registration date and the date you took the test.
