Shift from role of a unix administrator to developer

Hey Guys,
I am being offered a role of a unix administrator at the software company i work at and the opportunity given to me is tempting. But, my interest has always in development.

I am just curious to know if i accept this offer, then how easy would it be for me to shift to a developer role after say 1-2 years. Will the experience acquired be useful?

If you already have development experience then my advice is to take up the administrator job and slowly shift into Software Configuration Management.

If I were you, I"d happily take it up.

But what really is bothering me is would my experience count if i switch roles and how easy would the transition be for me!

That probably depends on your immediate supervisor more than any other factor.
Have you been automating processes with shell scripts? Gathering user requirements and producing implementation plans? There are probably some admin tasks that you can argue should count.
