other than .au can other sound format be played in java ie. mp3 etc if yes how and in which java versions please provide a short example

Java 1.4 introduced the JavaxSound API which can play a much wider range of formats; see http://www.exampledepot.com/taxonomy/term/300.

For MP3, specifically, you can use JMF. There pure-Java version of it wouldn't require the apple to be signed, and there is an MP3 addon for it.

In the future, please UseAMeaningfulSubjectLine. "applet" doesn't provide any hint what the question is about in a forum that's completely dedicated to applet questions.
