Verifying a JDK on a Mac ?

Forwarding a question for a friend. I'm not a Mac user -- so had no idea how to help. Any help or links would be appreciated.

I'm wondering if there's a way to verify that the JDK is already installed -- either from the desktop (preferable) or by running a variation on the find command.

Thanks,
Henry

All versions of OS X have Java installed. Depending on which version of OS X is used, one or more JVMs will be available (1.3, 1.4, 5, 6). Running /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app shows what's available, and allows the default JVM to be set.
