Just curious...

Who is currently preparing for the SCJA?

And when do you expect to sit the exam?

Thanks for replying.

It would be nice to see some more technical-questions traffic on this forum related to the SCJA.

If you, are anyone else have any, post away!

I am hoping to take it mid-September. I'd hoped that I could take it next week, but didn't get as far in preparing as I wanted to get.

I am studying/preapring for the exam as well. I picked you book up around the beginning of June. I got half way through it and a couple of people recommended reading Head First Java. I am just about finished reading that. Prior to your book, I had read Mike Murach's Java SE 6 and Java Programming. I am now completing Head First Java, then your book and plan to read through Cameron's as well. I realize I have not yet been too active on the message boards, but to be Honest Head First Java has really cleared a lot of the fog. Except, I seem to be struggling a little bit with the Networking and Threads chapter (15). More so with the Threads. I want to finish the chapter and then I will probably have some questions so that I can clear things up.

As far as when I plan on taking the exam, I am hoping for late September, early October.

Thanks,
Mike

After giving up on the idea of actually taking this exam and percolating(Charlie style---Two and a half men) for all this time , I decided to take it on Thursday last week. Took it this afternoon, 92%.

Glad I got some momentum going but would have liked to prepare better. I lost marks only the programming sections which is very annoying.

Best of luck to everybody that will be writing as well.

Hi Robert
I'm new to the SCJA fold and have a few queries. I hope you won't mind answering.
I went to the Oracle website, and there, I saw there are two versions of SCJA, for Java SE6, and Java SE7.
Needless to say, I'd like to opt for Java SE7 keeping future prospects in mind.
Could you tell me, if there is any difference in preparing for the two exams?

Thanks,
Saraj

Yes, there is a difference. The SCJA only has a subset of the information on the OCAJP7 exam, and the style of the exam is very very different. The latter is much more code-oriented with questions designed to challenge your knowledge (and corner-case) knowledge.

I recommend jumping right into the OCAJP7 exam, as this is the current path that Oracle has decided to go down.

However, if you want a quick and easy cert, go for the SCJA.

This page will have all your answers: http://www.coderanch.com/how-to/java/OcajpFaq.

When I have time, I'll update it... kinda swamped right now.

If you can't wait for the OCAJP7 study materials, any SCJP guides will get you where you need to be (for the OCAJP7 exam).

Congratulations!

You didn't attend any preparation course? It must have saved you a lot of money!

Planning to take mine in several weeks. Can anyone suggest how long the ideal preparation is before taking the exam?

It depends on your basic knowladge of Java, so probably nobody can tell you exactly. I am preparing about a month from Enthuware and Cameron Mckenzie's book. Hope I can pass scja next week.

I also have doubt , from Camerons mock exam book, do I have to pass/learn also about java 1.5 or it is enough to learn all other things related to java 1.6 and to avoid 1.5 ?

Any suggestion is welcome,

I'm using it, I find some of your affirmations sometimes confusing here, because I come from different languages such as C.
Anyway I would like to congratulate you for your great book.
Keep up the good work!

I will be doing my OSCJA exam about 27 days from the current date. I'm also using enthuware, though I'm (unfortunately) still hovering around the 50-60% mark on standard tests. However, the institution I am preparing for the exam through will give me a free second chance another 2 weeks afterwards should I fail the first time around. I only started java about 2 months ago with very little previous programming experience, so I think I still have something of an uphill battle ahead of me.

Tips on studying for the 1Z0-850:

-UML is removed from the exam.
-Composition and Associations.
-Major emphasis on Java Platforms and Integration Technologies, Client Technologies and Server Technologies.

Felix

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
