WebServer Vs ApplicationServer Vs Servlet Container

In the recent version of Tomcat(Servelt container) supports connection pooling and many other new features as Application Server. Whether i need expensive Application Server than cheap WebServer(HTTP) + ServletContainer(Tomcat) ?
