I've been a software developer for 30 years (but not Java) and I was recently laid-off (again).
I just finished a Java class at a local community college and now I'm hoping to get through the SCJP exam so I have something substaintial to put on my resume.
I'm trying to plod my way through Kathy and Bert's book.
Please help!!!

Barbara,
Welcome to JavaRanch!
As you read, do post back here when you have questions. People will definitely help.
It's probably a bit early to wish you good luck on the exam, but you can save it - "good luck on the SCJP" .

And know that you're not the only non-spring chicken in the pot. There are quite a few of us seasoned developers at the Ranch.

At some point the rounding error takes over and it's impossible to tell the difference.

Especially when the ages in question need to be represented in floating point to cover the range.

I'm so old that my age needs to be displayed in scientific notation!
Seriously...
Does anyone know the age of the oldest person to take (and pass) the SCJP?

I must be in the upper 10%. I've had my bus pass for the last 6 years.

Welcome to the Ranch
I tried to post earlier but something went wrong with my post. Please always use the "code" button when posting code. Since you are new, I have edited your post and you can see how much better it looks.
I think that code will compile, but not run; you will suffer an Exception passing a double to a %d tag. Ty changing the type of x to int .

Also you need to close your printf statement with a right paren.

How do you know whether I am 9999999.9999 years old rather than 9999999.9998?
You will need a %f tag for fixed-point output. More details in the Java™ Tutorials and the Formatter class .

Hi Barbara!
I too am an "older" software developer.
I have been doing serious Java development for three years now. I 'm fortunate to live in an area where I'm a big fish in a small pond, so when I applied for my current position 3 years ago I think my employer looked at my past experience an gave me a chance.
As you probably know, learning anything new involves some
There is plenty of aspirin at the ranch, it's helped me with a lot of my problems.
Good luck with the exam.

Thank you for reminding me; I was mistaken about %e which will print 9.99999e6 or similar.
Sorry for that mistake.
And always use %n, not \n in printf and similar methods.

Well I was 59 when I passed but that was 11 years ago. Learning new stuff keeps the brain active!
