Are any regular clean up or other regular maintenance operations recommended?

Since I got the Mac, I have not shut it down (always sleep), except when required after a software update.
Recently I noticed its started to slow down a bit. Is it because Mac is caching some files or something? ( I have opted not to turn the time machine on. Its off)
PS. I have 4 GIG RAM.

OSX has pre-built scripts that are scheduled to run at night and are responsible for several cleanup tasks.
Check for the scripts that are run on a daily/weekly/monthly base.
http://www.ehow.com/how_5096934_run-mac-os-maintenance-scripts.html holds a reference for manually running the scripts.

Google may give you several results for tweaking these scripts but it's uncertain if this is really necessary.

Usually, as with any *nix system a very-very-long uptime should not produce any problems as long as there are no zombies
or leaking applications hanging around in your memory.

Thanks Stephan.
I followed the link and ran the script(s) from the command line.

Where exactly is /private/etc/periodic located? I am unable to find it. I was expecting it under Macintosh HD. Not there under Applications or Library or System either.

Also, is there a way to change the schedule? I loathe to waste electricity by letting the Mac run the whole night and I let it sleep instead. If I can reschedule, I would rather do it during the morning when I usually come awake over my coffee and mails.

The path should work without /private - only /etc/periodic

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
