JasperReports: passing the current item in a list of objects into utility methods

I'm new to JasperReports, so any help is appreciated!

I have a report, allMembersSubreport, with a parameter that is an ArrayList of objects.
<parameter name="membersOnly" class="java.util.List"/>

I have a subreport in the detail band, EachMemberDetail, that must pass each item from the list into various utility methods, to drill down and retrieve info in String format.

Should I pass a subreportParameter into the next subreport? eg. <subreportParameter name="thisMemberDetail">
How should I specify a subreportParameterExpression that is a single item from the "membersOnly" list? Or is there another way to accomplish the goal?

Thanks for any help.

Dorcas
