container starts up and deployed web application.

How does the web container know, when it starts up, that there is a web application already deployed? I'm reading HFSJ, there they told, when the tomcat starts up, it looks for looks for deployed web application. My question, how does it know this?

it searches the webapps directory for directories and deploys the applications in it.

Tomcat has a webapps directory..
how do you deploy?
You put your web application's directory( or WAR file) in the tomcat's webapps directory and you start tomcat , once you do that tomcat finds your directory in webapps directory and deploys your web application.

Why will one have to overwrite directories. When you redeploy (ex. restart tomcat) your directory is read and deployed again
