Agency advert asking the impossible!

Just seen an advert that's requires the candates to have: "Over 5 years Java JDK 1.6 experience" -

Maybe I should not be so pedantic, but that means you either developed the actual JDK or you were using the JDK before it was released. Maybe if you were developing on the first beta release in Feb 2006, but companies I've worked for value stability too much to release on a beta version.

Maybe I'll send in a CV with 6 years 'experience' of JDK 1.6 - see what happens!

Take it with a pinch of salt.

They could have asked for some technologies which are yet to be invented.

Staffing people can create some great misnomers.

I bet there would be tons of people who would have faced this situation.

Best of Luck with your Job Hunt !!!

Not all that uncommon. Back during the 2001-2003 recession, there were ads demanding years of Java experience that James Gosling would have blushed to claim. But mostly they just published lengthy laundry lists of "must-have" skills that were statistically improbable for anyone to meet.

The more recent recession has spared us that much, at least.

A lot the of modern-day software development platforms are designed to permit parcelling out work to those with the best aptitude for it. A lot of modern-day business is predicated on making one person do all the work, regardless of aptitude.

I remember seeing a job advertisement in the year 2005 asking for 10 years of experience in .NET. Me and my friends had fun out of it. Guess the trend still continues.

Yeah - I think it works like this....

Technical people are under resourced and short of time... they need a 'good' developer.
HR department take the requirment and start talking to employement agencies. Technicial people are a bit too busy to help....
Employement agency know that they will be swamped with CV's - they don't understand the technology, so they add their own bits to the specification and they advertise....

I'm happy to play the agency game as we have little choice, in order to talk to a technical person - but I do try to stay away from companies that allow themselves to be represented like this

What if i reply to them & claim that "Over 5 years Java JDK 1.7 experience". Agencies are anyways Agencies, thats why we call them agencies

I'll admit that it has cost me a few opportunities, but I refuse to lie. If what I've got by now isn't good enough, 'em.

Then what happens when you get to the technical interviewer. The interviewer is going to know.

With the right sense of humor, he might just like it ... and insist on writing the technical part of the job ad himself next time around.
