I have two tomcat server on two different unix machine. I need to check whether both application server is running or not.
How can I check that an application server is properly running or not if It does not running I like to write a script that will automatically restart the stopped application server.
So how can I detect a server is not running??

Let the OS take care of it: http://www.yolinux.com/HOWTO/Process-Monitor-HOWTO.html
Maybe also worth a look: http://java-monitor.com/ (even though this won't help with the restarting-issue)

Actually, I use Nagios to periodically poll the servers. It allows me to not only determine if Tomcat is running but that critical apps are performing critical functions.

Customer surveys are for companies who didn't pay proper attention to begin with.
