I understand how certificating chaining works. But what I do not understand why it is used. Instead of having the root-CA sign certificate B and then have certificate B sign certificate A, why not just have the root-CA sign certificate A.
What purpose does the certificate in the middle serve?
 
I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
