Looking at today's Java update from Apple, I think it is being very specific about which version of the OS they will continue to release new versions of Java for. So:
  • 10.5 (Leopard) - still supported
  • 10.6 r 3 (Snow Leopard (older release)) - deprecated
  • 10.6 r 4 (Snow Leopard (current release)) - still supported
  • 10.7 (Lion) - will be supported

  • So this only appears to be an issue for people who are running Snow Leopard that have not been applying updates.

Not good news. I could still do my Java stuff under Linux or even (ugh) Windows on VMWare Fusion, but I'd rather stick with OSX.

    Good news!

Oracle and Apple Announce OpenJDK Project for Mac OS X

Java SE 6 will continue to be available for OS X Snow Leopard and will also be available for OS X Lion, and Oracle and Apple will work on Java SE 7 for OS X together, based on the OpenJDK project.
