Looking at today's Java update from Apple, I think it is being very specific about which version of the OS they will continue to release new versions of Java for. So:
10.5 (Leopard) - still supported10.6 r 3 (Snow Leopard (older release)) - deprecated10.6 r 4 (Snow Leopard (current release)) - still supported10.7 (Lion) - will be supported
So this only appears to be an issue for people who are running Snow Leopard that have not been applying updates.

Not good news. I could still do my Java stuff under Linux or even (ugh) Windows on VMWare Fusion, but I'd rather stick with OSX.
