How useful is the course?

First question, if I understand correctly, the OCP Java Programmer seems to be the base certification needed before you can take any others?

Secondly, is the course a good investment? Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 (SL-275-SE6) I was considering purchasing the value package with the course, practice exam, exam and retake. But, if I'm fine with a couple of good books, then I'd prefer to save the expense.

I am a Java programmer (web applications) at work so I have a pretty solid background, but I've never taken a formal training course in Java. My initial training was my last 2 years of my university degree where I used Java in 90% of my classes (except for the one I used C) but of course students don't necessarily do things right even if they make them work. I am fairly decent at design, and following good coding practices.

Personally, I feel 2250USD is way too expensive for OCPJP training of 5 days. For one, I don't think it is possible for one to get ready for OCPJP in 5 days even if one knows Java quite well. OCPJP requires a fair amount of memorization and being a human compiler to some extent, and that comes with practice. You already know the rules, you just need to orient your brain to not overlook things by practicing with exam style questions.

You might be better off with books and mock exams.

From the sound of it, you're too experienced to gain much from SL-275. And as mentioned, there is no one week course in the world that could prepare you for the SCJP exam.

I'm not sure if these courses are still available, and they don't map to any certification in general, but I used to be fond of OO-226 and of the 425 course.

I initially thought the course was required before you could take the exam which is why I was looking into it. Then after reading more thoroughly I realized you could just buy the exam. I was going to do the CD-ROM version so I could take it at my own pace and then use books to compliment it. But the CD-ROM version is still about $1000, although the value package includes a practice exam, exam and retake exam. Would that change either of your opinions? or it's still mighty expensive to spend on a course that won't have much of what I really need anyway? (since I'll still be picking up a few good books)

CD course seems a better option. But you can never replace a well written book because these books are read and commented upon by thousands of people, so I feel they are well tested for errors. Further, if you are not clear about any paragraph of the book, you will most probably find more information on it on the forums. As you can see from topic titles on this forum, same goes for widely used mock exams.

An expensive CD rom based course will probably not have an ecosystem like that associated with it. So you can't be sure whether you have covered everything required for the exam. IOW, you will end up buying a book anyway, so why not start with a book and see if you need anything else

I think you're better off with 3rd party books and mock exams. Much less expensive and probably similar (or better) quality.
