Howdy all,

I have been looking for a course like the cattle drive for quite a while, and am overjoyed to discover a source of nitpicking.

Figured I might as well introduce myself politely, as I expect we will be seeing quite a bit to each other.

My name is Katrina Owen, I live in Oslo, Norway, think the statics on www.userfriendly.org are great, and want to live somewhere really warm when I grow up.

I will be finishing my bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology on December 15th, and have discovered a passion for coding that far exceeds my interest in cloning and playing with genes in the lab.

I have dabbled in html, css, php, and realized early on that messy code drives me nuts, but there are very few places where I can learn how to write *good* code.

Up until now I have mostly used vim to edit code, but am willing to consider other solutions.

Best regards,
Katrina

Welcome to the JavaRanch and the Cattle Drive in particular.

I joined one month ago and have loved every minute of it.

If it is clean code you want then watch out!! Marilyn and Pauline are relentless. All my submissions (bar one) worked..... Not good enough though

Wait 'till you see the instructors solutions - each assignment gets better and better.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I am - and I will look out for your progress. At least it will give you something to do - it must be cold in Norway at this time of year (I know it has got cold here in the UK).

Regards

Nick

Hey Nick,

Nice to meet you I've been trying to tell myself that I should wait to start the drive until I finish my exams, but I can't help it ("not... much... time... must learn... code"). I get paid in a few days, so I will pay up and hand in the Hundred assignment. I wrote my first attempt last night instead of writing lab reports.

See you around!

Welcome, Katrina. I see no problem with editing your code using vim. I'm looking forward to receiving your first assignment.

I have googled some stuff.........

$200 is just under 1300 Norwegian Kroner - is that a lot? in British pounds it is great value for a great course of education - a typical 5 day course in Jave is 1500 about $2850!!!

However in the UK a pint of beer is 2.80 (maximum), in Norway I have heard it is 8 equivalent...

So, study don't drink and pay the $200. I PROMISE YOU you will NOT regret it.

Go for it...

It's getting cold and dark, and you are a biologist - remember that is even worse on the social skills level than a programmer!!!

Regards and the best of luck

Nick

Heh - I don't do alcohol, and don't smoke... great savings there. Talk about social outcast <grin>

I have no problem paying $200 for this course, since it is exactly what I am looking for.

See ya,
Katrina

As someone who stopped smoking 15 months ago (3 boys under the age of 8 taught me something!), I agree, but I know it is very expensive in Norway to buy a beer, so I am not surprised you do neither!

Social outcast - no way!.......

(a biologist or computer programmer) - whatever made you think like that?

Well if nothing else, the cattle drive will make you spit dust

p.s. have you got snow on the ground?

Yup Ice, sleet, sludge that freezes, snow, wind... you name it! Walking outside is hazardous for your health now-a-days!

Katrina, welcome to the drive! Tell me, how did you stumble onto JavaRanch? I, too, found this place when I was searching for something to help me scratch my newly discovered itch for programming. I have been hooked ever since.
On a completely different note, are you a native Norwegian? Do you speak Norwegian? The reason I ask is that my ballet teacher, Erling Sunde, was from Bergen. I just found out that he passed away in June of this year, and I found an article on a Norwegian website that has something to do with a ballet he was in back when he was working with Maurice Bejart. I can't read it because it's in Norwegian, and I'm dying for information about him.

Hi Carol,

I heard about JavaRanch in the acknowledgements of Head First Java which I picked up on a whim about two weeks ago.

I am half Norwegian and speak the language. The other half is American.

Send me the link and I'll see what I can summarize for you (I am really lousy at translation). It might take a few days, because I have an insane amount of school work that needs to be done right-now-preferably-yesterday.
