Start by reading the Swing tutorial for some Swing basics. Maybe the sections on "How to Use Menu Items" would be the place to start.

The Swing Tutorial Rob suggested is a great place to get some basics of Swing, after you go through the tutorials if you are still having difficulty, feel free to post the specific code which is troubling you.
