Returning a soap fault to client but not defined in WSDL

Hi,

I am confused on the following:
If a WSDL declares for an operation an input msg, an output msg (i.e. request/response MEP) but no fault msg, if for example during parsing or during processing, an error occurs, is the web service allowed to return a soap fault to the client? What kind of fault?
