For any reason, you want to take the control from the container, you will use BMP, otherwise CMP is mostly sufficient. By implementing BMP, you are responsible for persistance, synch up with database and other tasks which should be delegated to container and you as a developer concentrate on business logic implementation. But again, if you don't like container doing this for you, BMP is what needed.

Neither is better - they're different, as the articles I linked to point out. Also, both are obsolete - entity beans are dead, and JPA has taken its place.
