I've decided to add a level higher than "sheriff": marshal.
The idea is that at any given time there are exactly five marshals. In time, I might select somebody else to be a new marshal - thus displacing one of the existing marshals. These are the five sheriffs that are the biggest contributors to CodeRanch right now.
I'm trying to refocus my brain into the world of forward velocity of this site. And I think adding a few levels into the staff stuff will help.
The first task I am giving to the marshals is to select ten bartenders to promote to "saloon keeper". These will be the ten most active bartenders. It is from these ten that I will select future sheriffs. I expect them to have made their selection in about a month.
The five marshal choices are probably of no surprise to the regulars here:
Jeanne Boyarsky
Andrew Monkhouse
Ulf Dittmer
Christophe Verré
Ernest Friedman-Hill
I just tried to change their titles from "sheriff" to "marshal" - it looks like we might need a code change to do that. ??
If somebody could shuffle the ActiveStaff page to put the marshals at the top of the sheriff list - that would be swell.
Congratulations to the new marshals. I'm looking forward to see who makes the saloon keeper list.

So done. Ordering by first name, since we're a friendly bunch :-)
Congrats and IMVHO, Mr. Bear and Mr. Henry should be in the list.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, John. But though I provide the brown button art for our forums, the 5 marshals listed do a lot more to add value to the forum software than I have the time to do. Paul made good choices.
