send E-mail in background

i have a form which has a "Send Mail" checkbox option which sends a mail to the selected members after saving a particular record...

my problem is sending mail option slows down the record saving process...is there anyway we can send the e-mail in background after saving the record...how can we seperate the process...

please suggest a suitable solution..

What if the user wants a confirmation about sent email ? can we get back to the user if we use another thread ?
