communication using blackberry

I was reading about how communication works using blackberry.
I read that Blackberry maker (RIM) have their own servers. When an email is sent from bb, it goes to the RIM server, which in turn pushes it to the target. Thats why communication is fast using BB.
This notification works only when communication is bb to bb. If target is yahoo or hotmail, then again email will lie in inbox for user to check.
In case of other email service providers (yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc), user sends an email from his ID to another user ID, and this email sits in target user's inbox, till the target checks his email box by himself. He will not be notified that he has received an email.

This means my email service provider is RIM. I have never seen an email ID with blackberry. How does it work, when user has bb equipment and has yahoo id. If the uer sends email from his yahoo account, how will this communication be routed through RIM server ?

Does bb notify the target user , if he has another equipment rather than bb ?

Why not other equipment manufacturer ( Apple, Samsung , nokia etc) not work the same way like RIM ?

Please explain how communication using BB works as its confusing to me and I can not get answers on my own.

Thanks
