javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: java.lang.NullPointerException when updating

Hello there

I am writing because I have been trying everything but the error remains. This happens whenever I am trying to update my database.

i am trying to change a user's password:

<h:form id="changepass">
			<h:outputText value="#{existingUserBean.username}" /><br />
			Old Password: <h:inputSecret value="#{userBean.oldPassword}" id="oldPassword" />
			<h:message for="oldPassword" /><br />
			New Password: <h:inputSecret value="#{userBean.password}" validator="#{userBean.validatePassword}" id="password" />
			<h:message for="password" /><br />
			Confirm New Password: <h:inputSecret value="#{userBean.confirmpassword}" id="confirmPassword" />
			<h:message for="confirmPassword" /><br />
			<h:commandButton value="Change" action="#{existingUserBean.changePassword}" /><br />
		</h:form>

and this is the code in my existingUserBean where I am calling changePassword.

			if (!password.equals(confirmpassword)) {
				Helper.addErrorMessage("changepass:confirmPassword", "Passwords do not match");
				return null;
			} else {
				try {
					user.setPassword(password);
					userService.update(user);
					return getViewName() + "?faces-redirect=true";
				} catch (IllegalArgumentException e) {
					Helper.addErrorMessage("changepass:oldPassword", e.getMessage());
					return null;
				}
			}
		}
}

and this is the user ejb:
