My recomendation:
http://www.amazon.com/SCJP-Certified-Programmer-Java-310-065/dp/0071591060/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294448058&sr=8-1

I have it myself and found it very easy to follow. Havent compared it to any other book though.

Also check the FAQ for various information: https://coderanch.com/how-to/java/SCJP-FAQ#books

You can directly appear for the SCJP6(310-065). Also do check out ScjpFaq for more information.

Hi

I echo Malte Wannerskog's statement.

http://www.amazon.com/SCJP-Certified-Programmer-Ja...?ie=UTF8&qid=1294448058&sr=8-1

Along with this Whizlabs mock test I found best for preparation.

Thanks
Javin

Certificate helps you get the foot in the door for a programming job. Of course, you must have the expertise the employer is looking for, along with interpersonal skills.

Wall Street Journal recently posted an article http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704723104576062173458318658.html?mod=WSJ_Careers_CareerJournal_4

Software engineer Jesse Severe says he can pretty much throw a dart on a map and find a job. The 41-year-old from San Diego says he's contacted by headhunters at least once a month, at times has been able to work from home for half his workweek and makes a comfortable living.
