3 years experience Java/J2EE Developer, what to consider whether to transfer to Business Analyst ?

I have 3 years experience as a Java/J2EE Developer, and now there is an opening for a transfer/advance to Business Analyst.

What I know now is if I transfer/advance to Business Analyst position, I will almost come out from the technical side of IT and delve into the business side.

My doubt is what is the good/bad or gain/loss in such transfer ? How to determine whether Business Analyst is what I want and is what I love ? What should I taking into consideration before I make the final decision ?

If I don't take up this position ? What is other career path or track that a Developer can advance to ? only Software Architect ? QA/Testing ?

Thanks in advance !

3 yrs sounds a bit too early. Also...you need to be careful here. If you do not have a background in business discipline(MBA/CFA etc), as a technical person, shifting to BA will get you ordinary roles initially. Worse, the role will say Sr. BA...and you will do a bit of everything:a bit of design, a bit of cordination, a bit of project planning...and it will be hard to specialise.
Why BA appeals to you? It may seem like a glamorous role...but that is an illusion. The best BAs are the ones either with a business background or lots of experience.
My advice...wait 2 - 3 more yrs and reconsider.
Architect is better than QA..just as a side note.

Thanks Victor Ramen !!!

I heard most people said that "Business Analyst (BA) is easier to move to become Project Manager (PM)", but I am doubt on this ... or is it actually depends on the company ? Somehow is like in certain company, technical skill is just to produce a product that run in production without the care of standard/convention/architecture, so long as it runs then will be alright no matter how bad the code is design or written, so in this kind of company technical people doesn't have much chances cuz they are not that important, or even this kind of company don't have software architect and proper QA ppl. Is my perception correct ?

My opinion is shifting from a technical background to a functional background (BA) is not that hard but the other way around is too hard. I do not mean that doing BA is easy but I mean that the time required for such a shift is lesser for a technical to business role than vice versa. Remember, any work hard to achieve is appraised more than the work easy to achieve. Well, this is just my opinion.

So could I say it is better to move to a role which involve Business Analyst + System Analyst + Design + Development ... which means I am not out from technical side, and still have the chance to gain experience on business analysis , liaison with client , conclude/produce business requirement and functional requirement.

BUT is there a Role which doing this ?
