Yes, I said had to. Needed it for a client. I'm syncing now. I've never felt the need to have one. Knowing my luck, I'll fall in love with it. I was a tad bummed that I couldn't put it off until the next gen comes out in a few months, but oh well.

So right off the bat I don't like how the mail app works. Maybe I'm missing a setting, but why doesn't it look more like Mail.app on OSX? There is enough screen for it. It's especially annoying because I have 2 accounts set up so I have to navigate quite a bit to get to one or the other.

The UI for the iPad and other iOS apps is very different from that of the Mac. Excepting them to be the same is going to frustrate you as most apps follow the iOS guidelines.
Let go, Luke!
I personally find the UI very well-suited for touch interfaces. (That's not to say I don't have my big list of improvements in mind -- but I always do!)

Yea, I get that. But I don't need the entire screen to read a single email. In fact, most of the emails I get I can read without ever opening them, even on the iphone, because of the preview bit. But you're right, I need to let go a bit of the notion that things should be similar.

Someday you'll have 50+ year old eyes too and appreciate the full-screen messages.

I discovered that if I use the mail app in landscape, it looks more like what I'd expect.

Oh, yeah. That's what I always do. Sorry, I should've mentioned that.

How few months is it until the next gen comes out? Does anyone know? I haven't even heard any reliable rumors lately.

There are rarely any reliable rumors, but I've heard April bandied about more than any other rumored time frame. But take that with...
