UTF-8 is the default encoding for XML, so it could be ommitted.

Are you sure the characters are encoded incorrectly or is it possible it is "only" an output problem. Some consoles may not be able to present the characters correctly.

Thanks for the Reply,

"printing out" is just the way, what i test the encoded string correct or not, because at the end i want to show this characters in a dialog, and now all data are correct, only these umlaute displayed crasy.

otherwise how can i know, wheater it encoded realy correct or not?

You could either in inspect the bytes you receive to see what you get exactly or you save them to a file in a completely controlled way i.e. set the encoding on every conversion from/to String and on every file operation/reader/writer. Then you could just check with an encoding-aware editor.

"Only" the umlauts are crazy is not very helpful. If all other data is latin alphabet without any special characters then most likely a problem will never occur because they have the same code point (ASCII position) in virtually every encoding. The problem still lurks for the time you get some unexpected characters.
